history

The long-time head of the SOB, Peter Gosztonyi, in the library (1994)

The Swiss East European Library SOB emerged from the private collection of the Bernese economist and politician Peter Sager , which he had been building since 1948. In 1959, the Swiss East European Library was incorporated into a foundation, which private as well as various public bodies participated in the financing of the following years. Like the Swiss East Institute founded by Sager shortly before , the Eastern European Library was located at Jubiläumsstrasse 43 in Bern. Sager initially headed both institutions in parallel, before the historian Peter Gosztony took over the management of the library from 1963 .

After the dissolution of the Swiss East Institute in 1994, it became a branch of the City and University Library of Bern on January 1, 1997 by resolution of the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern under the new management of Christophe von Werdt . Since 2007 the SOB has been a branch library of the University Library of Bern in the field of theology and humanities.
