history

The Swiss Central Commission for the Fight against Tuberculosis was founded in 1903 on the initiative of the Association of Doctors of Lung Hospitals . It was later called the “Swiss Association against Tuberculosis”. On behalf of the federal authorities, the "association" fought the rapidly spreading tuberculosis and coordinated the activities of the welfare offices. Tuberculosis has been falling sharply in Switzerland since the 1960s. Other lung diseases such as asthma , chronic bronchitis , COPD , and respiratory allergies have become more common since then. The "Association" therefore expanded its activities and from 1971 was called the "Swiss Association against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (SVTL)". In 1998, the previously loosely connected cantonal leagues merged more closely under the umbrella of the Swiss Lung League (LLS).

Popular initiative "Protection against passive smoking" with "Zaugg" campaign 2012

The federal popular initiative “Protection against passive smoking” was submitted on May 18, 2010. For the campaign, the Lung League created the fictional character of a tobacco lobbyist "Doctor Marcel Zaugg". The Lung League used 45,000 francs (around five percent of the campaign budget) to reach a younger target audience on social media. The departure of "Zaugg" was staged on September 17th. The initiative was rejected by the people on September 23, 2012.
