René Meylan (born December 30, 1929 in Boudry , † February 27, 2000 in Bevaix , entitled to reside in Le Chenit and Neuchâtel ) was a Swiss politician ( SP ).

René Meylan was born on December 30, 1929 in Boudry, the son of the worker Auguste-Philippe Meylan and Olga Renée, née Denoréaz. Meylan first studied law at the University of Neuchâtel before being admitted to the bar in 1954 . As a result, he ran a law firm in Neuchâtel from 1956 to 1970.

René Meylan was married to Jacqueline Simone, the daughter of Roger Théodore Carrel. He died on February 27, 2000 two months after he had turned 70 in Bevaix.

He was first an active member of the Communist Youth, then of the Swiss Labor Party (PdA) . In 1958 he was one of the co-founders of the Nouvelle gauche socialiste, a party between communism loyal to the Soviet Union and social democracy, which dissolved in 1963.

He was then from 1964 to 1970 in the central executive committee and from 1966 to 1970 in the executive committee of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland. At the same time he published the socialist daily La Sentinelle (from 1966 Le Peuple-La Sentinelle ) between 1963 and 1971 .

At the local political level Meylan held office from 1960 to 1970 as a member of the General Council ( legislature ) of the city of Neuchâtel. In addition, he represented his party at cantonal level from 1961 to 1970 in the Neuchâtel Grand Council . In 1970 Meylan was elected to the Neuchâtel State Council, to which he was a member until 1980 and in which he was head of the Department of Industry and Justice. There he acted as an intermediary between employers and employees. In addition, he was a member of the Council of States at the federal level from 1978 to 1987 .

Meylan acted as a member of several federal commissions, including the so-called election commission set up by Friedrich Traugott Wahlen , which was entrusted with drawing up a draft for the total revision of the federal constitution .
