Robert Ducret

Robert Ducret (born January 10, 1927 in Geneva ; died September 28, 2017 in Geneva; entitled to reside in Plainpalais [part of the city of Geneva from 1930]) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ). He was a State Councilor of the Canton of Geneva and a Councilor of States .

Origin, education and profession

Ducret is the son of a coal merchant from Geneva. He began his professional life with coal shoveling in the family business. He later got a trade diploma. In 1958 he took over the family business and concentrated the business on the oil trade. He succeeded in increasing sales from CHF 400,000 to 13 million per year. The company called "Ducret & Cie" was run by his wife during his time on the State Council. With her Ducret had two daughters.

politics

From 1955 to 1973 Ducret was a member of the local parliament of Carouge . In 1965 he was elected to the Geneva Grand Council and remained its member until his election to the State Council in 1977. In the State Council, he headed the finance department. As a Grand Council, he campaigned for social housing. As a State Councilor, he reorganized the canton's finances and was able to lower taxes for married women and AHV pensioners.

In 1983 Ducret was elected to the Council of States. He defeated the incumbent Willy Donzé ( SP ). In the same year he ran to succeed Federal Councilor Georges-André Chevallaz . In the elections on December 7, 1983, however, he was defeated by the Vaudois National and State Councilor Jean-Pascal Delamuraz . He remained in the Council of States until 1991 and also presided over its finance committee. He was also involved in the preparations for the introduction of VAT .

From 1968 to 1971 he was President of the FDP Geneva. After leaving the Council of States, he held other mandates. For example, he mediated a Geneva labor dispute and from 1989 to 2000 he was the Geneva State Council representative for the reception of asylum seekers.
