Antoine de Riedmatten

Antoine de Riedmatten (also: Anton von Riedmatten ; * October 6, 1811 in Sion ; † December 6, 1897 ibid) was a Swiss politician . From 1848 to 1857 he was a member of the National Council, after which he served as State Councilor of the Canton of Valais until 1871 .

biography

He came from an influential Valais patrician dynasty that has been traceable since the 13th century and whose roots go back to the hamlet of Riedmatten in the parish of St. Niklaus . His father Pierre-Louis was a councilor and mayor (head of the civic community ) of the canton capital Sion. Antoine de Riedmatten worked as a lawyer and notary . From 1843 to 1847 he was Vice- Grosskastlan and in 1847 Kastlan von Sitten. From 1853 to 1857 he worked as a judge at the district court . In the Swiss Army he last had the rank of lieutenant colonel .

Politically, Riedmatten belonged to the Catholic-conservative camp. From 1847 to 1850 he served as the Citizens' Council , from 1848 to 1850 and from 1853 to 1857 as the Municipal Councilor of Sion. After the surrender of the canton of Valais in the Sonderbund War , he was a member of the provisional government. Riedmatten ran for the first National Council elections in 1848 and was elected in the Central Valais constituency. He was re-elected twice in a row. In 1852 he also moved into the Grand Council, five years later he was elected to the State Council. Riedmatten headed the Department of the Interior from 1857 to 1869, then until 1871 the building and education departments. From 1877 to 1893 he served as governor of Sion, and from 1879 to 1885 he was a member of the Grand Council once more.
