biography

Johann Karlen was the son of an innkeeper. He completed a medical degree in Germany , including at the University of Heidelberg , where he joined the Corps Helvetia in 1831 . After graduating, he settled as a doctor in Thierachern , where he owned the Mühlematt manor . Karlen belonged to the radical liberal movement. In March 1845 he took part in the second free march to Lucerne and in the rank of major in November 1847 in the Sonderbund War.

In the years 1846 to 1847, 1848 to 1849 and 1850 to 1853, Karlen sat on the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern . He ran successfully in the first parliamentary elections in October 1848 and then represented the Oberland constituency in the National Council . Because of a conflict of direction with the Liberals , he resigned his mandates in October 1850. Karlen was politically active against the poverty of the peasantry and the supremacy of the lawyers. In 1848 and 1849 he took in political refugees from Germany. In 1859 he emigrated to the USA, where his trail is lost.

His younger brother Jakob Karlen and his cousin Johann Jakob Karlen were also national councilors.
