Johann Jakob Karlen (born January 16, 1819 in Diemtigen , † March 21, 1873 in Bern ) was a Swiss politician . From 1857 to 1872 he was a member of the National Council, from 1857 to 1871 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Bern .
biography
Like his father, Karlen worked as a farmer and landowner, as well as a cattle breeder . In March 1845 he took part in the second free march to Lucerne and was subsequently regarded as a leader of the radical liberals in the Bernese Oberland . From 1846 to 1850 he worked as an official administrator , from 1850 to 1852 and from 1854 to 1857 as governor in the district of Niedersimmental . In 1846 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern , of which he was a member until 1850.
Karlen ran in the National Council elections in 1857 and was elected in the Oberland constituency. The Grand Council elected him to the government council in the same year. Due to his rank as a colonel , he was responsible for the military department in the cantonal government until 1871. At the end of the 1850s he began to adopt a more moderate stance, as a result of which the conservatives respected him as a lobbyist in agriculture, while he often fell out with the radicals, especially on railroad issues. Otherwise he only went public on military issues. In 1871 Karlen resigned as a member of the government, in 1872 he failed to be re-elected as a national councilor.
His cousins Jakob Karlen and Johann Karlen were also national councilors.
