Ulrich Meister senior

Ulrich Meister senior (born August 26, 1801 in Benken ; † April 1, 1874 in Zurich ) was a Swiss politician . From 1856 to 1866 he was a member of the National Council.

biography

The son of a justice of the peace graduated from the forestry college in Tharandt ( Saxony ). Meister then worked as a notary chancellor in Andelfingen . In 1822 he became chief forester of the Benken district; he held this position until 1870. At the municipal level, he campaigned for the school system. In 1834 he founded the secondary school in Benken, where he was a member of the school administration and administration from 1834 to 1869. He also served as a district councilor for the Andelfingen district .

As a representative of the Liberals , Meister was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Zurich in 1842 , to which he belonged until 1869. In December 1855 he ran successfully in a by-election in the constituency of Zurich North and entered the National Council. He was on Alfred Escher's side and was President of the Railway Commission and a member of the founding committee of the Rhine Falls Railway . Meister rejected the democratic movement and switched to the liberal center group in 1860. In 1866 he resigned as a national councilor.

His son Ulrich Meister junior , born in 1838, was also a member of the National Council.
