biography

The son of the writer Sergio Maspoli studied piano at the Lucerne School of Music and German studies in Hamburg . He then worked as a music teacher, cabaret artist and journalist. He was a correspondent for German-Swiss newspapers. He also wrote plays.

Maspoli was a member of the Free Democratic Party . In 1989 he met Giuliano Bignasca in the FDP , with whom he launched the free newspaper "Il Mattino della Domenica", which he financed in 1990. Her success led her to found the protest party Lega dei Ticinesi in 1991 , of which Maspoli became vice-president. From 1991 to 2003 Maspoli was a member of both the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino and the National Council. At the cantonal level, Maspoli was also parliamentary group leader. In the National Council, the Lega joined the parliamentary group of Swiss Democrats . In July 1993 Maspoli was involved in a stroll on the Ticino motorway , with which the legislators sought to enforce more rights for motorists. In the 1995–1999 term of office, Maspoli was the Lega's only national councilor.

In 1993 he launched the daily newspaper «L'Altra Notesia», which went bankrupt in 1995. Maspoli said his newspaper had been read but had not received any advertising. He blamed defamation campaigns directed against him and the financial problems of his newspaper for his non- election to the State Council . He worked as a PR consultant for the retailer Denner , but got more and more difficulties professionally and privately. A high mountain of debt had piled up. Lega president Giuliano Bignasca and the SVP section of the canton of Ticino, who had entered into a list , did not nominate Maspoli for the 2003 National Council elections.

Maspoli was the editor-in-chief of the free newspaper "Ticino Oggi", financed by Thermoselect , which was expecting the contract to build a waste incineration plant in Giubiasco , but had a legal dispute with the Canton of Ticino behind it. As a lobbyist for the interests of Thermoselect, he and like-minded people forged around 7,000 signatures for a referendum against a credit of 9 million francs for the preparatory work on this project. When the procedure was exposed, he apologized to the people of Ticino and only wanted to keep his seat in the National Council. He resigned from the other offices.

Maspoli ran in 2003 with his own list called “Risorgimento Ticinese” (“Ticino rebirth”), but failed to be re-elected and from then on lived in seclusion. The overweight chain smoker suffered from heart and respiratory problems and had to undergo multiple operations. As a result, the criminal proceedings against him could not be pursued. On the night of June 11th to June 12th, 2007, he succumbed to health problems in the hospital.
