John Huchra
John Peter Huchra (born December 23, 1948 in Jersey City , † October 8, 2010 in Lexington ) was an American astronomer .
For many years he measured redshifts of galaxies in order to determine the structure of the universe . In 1989 he discovered the Great Wall together with Margaret Geller . He discovered the well-known gravitational lens that is responsible for the Einstein Cross and is now known as the Huchras lens .
He was Vice Provost at Harvard University and Professor of Astrophysics at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics . In 1991 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1992 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society , and in 1993 a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
The asteroid (4656) Huchra was named after him.
