NGC 259 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 184 million light years from the Milky Way and about 155,000 light years across. Together with six other galaxies, it forms the NGC 271 group ( LGG 13 ).
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 331 .
The object was discovered on December 13, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
