NGC 262 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 208 million light years from the Milky Way and is listed as a Seyfert-2 galaxy . With a diameter of 1.3 million light years, it is the largest known galaxy of its kind. Presumably, the system with NGC 266 is gravitationally bound .
Together with 42 other galaxies, it forms the NGC 315 group .
The object was discovered on September 17, 1885 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
