Ivan Jandl (born January 24, 1937 in Prague , † November 21, 1987 there ) was a Czech film actor and radio presenter.

Life

Ivan Jandl was born in Prague as the son of the accountant Klement Jandl and his wife Bozena. He survived poliomyelitis without permanent damage at the age of three . His love for acting was already evident in school and his participation in the school choir, so that he participated in a regional radio show at a young age. He got his first engagement as an actor in 1947 in Martin Frič's feature film Varúj ...! , albeit in an extra role.

It was here that he was discovered by the American-Austrian director Fred Zinnemann , who engaged Jandl in 1947 for his post-war drama The Geographed . Jandl's portrayal of a surviving child from a concentration camp won the Academy Juvenile Award , an honorary Oscar for children and young people, and an honorary Golden Globe Award in 1949 . However, Jandl's participation in both awards was forbidden by the Komunistická strana Československa and the communist regime, so that both awards had to be sent to Czechoslovakia .

Despite the success that Jandl enjoyed abroad, he was denied a positive response at home. After he had acted as a minor actor in only three other films from 1949 to 1950, he then finished compulsory school. When he decided to study drama at the theater faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague , he was rejected from the school on the grounds that he should not have accepted an American award. Jandl kept afloat financially with odd jobs until he found a job with a radio in 1965. In 1969 he was made a moderator , but already dismissed in 1972 without giving any further reasons. Most recently, Jandl found work as a stage worker in a theater in Teplice, Czech Republic .

In November 1987, Jandl was found dead in his Prague apartment. He died at the age of 50 from complications of diabetes mellitus .
