Michael Alexander Gerngroß (born October 20, 1977 in Ulm ) is a contemporary German artist of abstract color painting , best known for his large-format oil paintings.

Life

As a former member of the Regensburger Domspatzen , after graduating from high school, Gerngroß studied art and art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and then for a year at the Art Academy in Naples as part of an Erasmus grant . There he worked as a photo assistant at Massimo Velo Sass, responsible for Bene Culturali , Napoli. From 2006 he is a student of Professor Jerry Zeniuk in Munich . He finished his studies in 2009 with a diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Bavarian State Examination for Art Education. Gerngroß lives and works in Grafrath am Ammersee . Since 2015 he has been teaching at the Dominikus-Zimmermann Gymnasium in Landsberg am Lech .

Since 1999, he has been presenting his work to a broad public in Germany and abroad in solo and group exhibitions. He concentrates on so-called color space painting , which among other things corresponds to similarities with the early work of Frank Stella or Joan Mitchell , the American abstract expressionism of the 50s / 60s. His works deal with opposites, light and shadow, strong structures and balanced surfaces. This will be taken to extremes by the use of aluminum foil from 2009. From 2010 the painter reduced the colors and concentrated more on the composition and structure of his pictures. Here, too, he is always looking for a dialogue with Minimal Art artists . In many ways his work is a reflection of art history and at the same time an experiment with new materials, colors and shapes, which he uses in the sense of a reduced, abstract visual language. The paintings slowly develop into works with an almost sculptural character that sometimes leave the two-dimensionality. This step finally paved the way for him to develop the “Horizontal Structures” group of works. Since 2012 the "constructions", three-dimensional wall objects that now reach into the real space, have been created.
