Sartory-Säle is the name of one of the largest Cologne event halls in the center of Cologne near Friesenplatz , named after the Cologne restaurateur family Sartory.

history

The Cologne Varieté " Groß-Köln ", which emerged in 1912 from the brewery "Cölner Bürgerbräu Josef Waßmann" founded in 1896, stood in the place of today's Sartory halls until it was destroyed in World War II . Carnival artists such as humorist Otto Reutter (November 1928), but also the Comedian Harmonists (May 1929) appeared in this variety show . Willi Ostermann's carnival revue The Fastelovend Princess is premiered here in 1930.

The new building planned by the architect Wilhelm Riphahn, who shaped the city of Cologne, was completed in time for the start of the carnival on November 11, 1948 under the name Sartory-Saal . This made the halls next to the Williams Building the only event hall in war-torn Cologne. Name giver and client was the restaurateur Carl Sartory sen. (* May 4, 1909 Cologne, † December 24, 1953 ibid). The first expansion with architect Wilhelm Koep takes place as early as 1950 . Carl Sartory's children Hilde, Carl and Hans Sartory form the first Cologne children's triumvirate in 1950, presented in the Sartory halls. The first KAJUJA meeting took place here on January 25, 1950 .

At the carnival meeting of the Lyskircher boys on January 1, 1952, a scandal broke out when the well-known Cologne handcrafted speaker Karl Küpper delivered his speech "D'r verdötscht Funk-Reporter" and raised his hand as if to check whether it was raining started and said: “Et eß ald aries on the hair!” (“It's raining again”). With this number, he satirizes the Nazi salute during the Nazi era, pointing now to the danger that by the return of old elites states of the Nazi era lived on.

After the owner's death in 1953, his widow Mathilde Sartory (* April 21, 1909, † May 20, 1998) took over the management, in 1966 she handed over to daughter Hilde Sartory (* July 4, 1940, † June 26, 2015) Guided tour, which shortly afterwards by her brothers Carl jun. and Hans Sartory (born April 28, 1944 Cologne, † March 20, 2006 ibid). In 1959 the Sartory light games were added.

The organizers have been organizing beat competitions here with beat bands from the region since 1965 . In September 1968 the Cologne Stowaways (with Hartmut Pries, Peter Schütte and Erich "Erry" Stoklosa) performed at such a beat festival and won first prize. The Bläck Fööss later developed from them . A large number of rock concerts were also held here, including a. by Pretty Things (December 4, 1966), Queen (December 6, 1974), Status Quo (February 23, 1975), Scorpions (March 7, 1979) or AC / DC on October 18, 1978 (“Powerage” tour ) or November 13, 1979 ("Highway To Hell" tour). The musical Hair celebrated its German premiere here in 1971, and on July 16, 1981 the Rockpalast was a guest here. BAP performed in the halls from December 3rd to 7th, 1984.

Since 1963, the Sartory halls have regularly hosted boxing events . Vitali Klitschko played his sixth (March 8, 1997) and sixteenth (March 7, 1998) professional fight here. And Regina Halmich won her 18th world championship fight in the Sartory halls in front of 1,300 spectators on March 28, 1999, and the WIBF flyweight title on May 13, 2000 .

Marcus Sartory's refusal to provide space for a conference planned by the legal courts Compact-Magazin GmbH for October 29, 2016 attracted media attention : After the political orientation of the congress organizer became known, Sartory had terminated the contract, which is why he threatened him -Mail was attacked. Compact then moved to Berlin at the beginning of November. Instead of the original congress, the “No Racism Room” benefit festival took place in the Sartory halls on October 29, 2016, with around 1,500 participants, which also called for a broad alliance of various Cologne initiatives. Bands such as Kasalla , Querbeat , Miljö and Hanak as well as the cabaret artists Jürgen Becker , Wilfried Schmickler and Fatih Çevikkollu took part in the program.

Location and capacity

Due to the annual carnival events ("television sessions") broadcast on television, the Sartory halls are also known nationwide and have become a Cologne institution. The multifunctional festival halls are conveniently located in downtown Cologne. They consist of 7 halls, of which the “Sartory Hall” is the largest with a maximum capacity of 1,400 people. This is followed by the "Ostermann-Saal" with up to 800 people. In total, the halls offer space for 3,500 guests on an area of ​​around 3,850 m².

The Sartory halls are operated by Sartory Säle GmbH & Co. KG . Sartory Säle Verwaltungs-GmbH , currently represented by Carl Sartory and his son Marcus, has unlimited liability in the company . Marcus Sartory joined the management team in 2012 after Sandra Sartory - daughter of Hans Sartory and since March 2006 managing director alongside Carl Sartory - left the company due to differences. The Sartory Beteiligungs-GbR family acts as the parent company .
