The Indian settlement Zollstock , also called Minnesota in Cologne , is a settlement that emerged in the Zollstock district of Cologne at the end of the 1920s .

development

At the end of the 1920s, due to the emergency ordinances of Reich Chancellor Heinrich Brüning, Cologne's Lord Mayor Konrad Adenauer left large families of unemployed people with settlement land for development. This also included the Oberer Komarweg makeshift settlement area, on which plots were allocated for development. For this purpose, building permits were given to the families . There were only minor requirements, such as a concreted septic tank or the collection of rainwater in tons. The construction of the house had to start within a year at the latest, otherwise the building permit would expire. That is why many houses were created very individually.

After the Second World War , refugees settled in the settlement. Later, students from the alternative scene also settled here. In 1978 the change in the zoning plan threatened the settlement. The expansion of the southern cemetery was planned there. However, these plans could be averted. The Kalscheurer Weg eG cooperative bought the site from Deutsche Bahn in the late 1990s and is now the owner of the site.

Naming

"Minnesota" riding stables in the Indian settlement

The term Indian settlement goes back to the journalist and author Hans Conrad Zander , who lived in the settlement. While traveling through North America , he got to know an Indian reservation. He found the settlement in Zollstock to be similarly idiosyncratic and therefore coined the term Indian settlement , which has been around since then, also because the settlement has a rather wild, idiosyncratic character.
