On the Kölnberg
On the Kölnberg is the colloquial name of a high-rise complex of nine buildings built in 1973 in the outer Cologne district of Meschenich in the area of the streets "An der Fuhr", "Am Rondorferpfad" and "Alte Brühler Straße". The houses have up to 26 floors and have 1,318 residential units between 29 and 120 square meters of living space. Around 4,100 people from over 60 nations currently live in the high-rise complex.

Originally, the high-rise complex was designed as a high-quality real estate project under the name “Wohnpark auf dem Kölnberg” as part of a builder model. Each house had its own caretaker , coin operated washing machines and dryers , two elevators and garbage chutes on all floors. In the complex there was a swimming pool with a sauna area, a tennis court and a small soccer field, multi-storey car parks and an underground car park, a kindergarten and various shops. These included a supermarket, a pharmacy, a bank branch, a laundry, a bakery, a flower shop and a kiosk.
The letting of the apartments, which were mainly intended as capital investments , progressed very slowly after the high-rise complex was completed in 1974. Another reason was the poorly developed infrastructure in the Meschenich district and the location, which was perceived as too remote from Cologne city center or the neighboring city of Brühl . For this reason, vacant apartments were also given to economically weak tenants relatively quickly. The socio-economic differences among the residents and the increasing influx of financially weak migrants ultimately led to the tenants originally intended as the target group moving out more often as well as partly illegal subletting. The developments surrounding the prostitution milieu in the neighboring Cologne district of Höningen also had negative effects on the high-rise complex . The high-rise complex is now a social hotspot . Conditions reached a low point in June 2014 when a partially decomposed corpse was thrown from one of the high-rise buildings.
In the 2013 federal election , the high-rise complex formed its own electoral district 21304 (constituency 94 / Cologne II). In the accompanying structural data for the city of Cologne, the proportion of foreigners in the voting district is given as 61.8 percent, which is higher than in any other Cologne voting district. Only 1,135 residents (27.7 percent) were eligible to vote. In fact, 309 eligible voters took part in the election, not including postal voters. This corresponds to a voter turnout of only 27.3 percent.
Others
The high-rise complex, whose apartments have been continuously bought by two major investors since 2010, is a regular location for filming various film and television productions, as well as the action and residence of the protagonist of the television series Danni Lowinski .
The film Am Kölnberg by Robin Humboldt and Laurentia Genske, shot in 2014, accompanies four residents of the high-rise estate over a period of two years.
