Schillerstrasse was a television program dedicated to "improvisational comedy" ( impromptu comedy , improvisational theater ). It was recorded in front of an audience without a script , but the actors were given keywords for their tasks by directing instructions. In September 2014 RTL broadcast with Hotel Heimat: Please disturb! a similar format.
Concept and content
The action takes place in a living room in the fictional Schillerstrasse No. 9 in Cologne , where the tenant Jürgen Vogel (since the beginning of 2009; Cordula Stratmann played the tenant up to and including season 4, which ended in spring 2007 ) receives visits from friends and relatives . The participants, who, with a few exceptions, play under their real names, only know the topic of the episode in advance; the entire plot must be improvised as comedically as possible. Via a receiver in their ear, they also receive stage directions from the game master, which they have to incorporate into the plot, for example "Jürgen: The smallest thing makes you cry!", While the game master is displayed below. Broadcasts are largely uncut, and breakdowns are not removed either.
The format was developed by Maike Tatzig , who is also the executive producer of the show. From September 2005 she took over the role of game director from Georg Uecker . The production company is Hurricane Fernsehproduktion GmbH.
development
Schillerstrasse has been running since September 3, 2004 on the German television station Sat.1 .
Cordula Stratmann played the tenant, while Georg Uecker took on the role of game director. The originally only half-hour episodes in the later evening program were so successful that in January 2005, with the second season, the broadcasting time was extended to one hour and the broadcast on the main channel was brought forward at 8:15 pm (every Thursday).
On January 26, 2007, Schillerstraße celebrated its 100th episode with a 90-minute special edition that looked back on the previous 99 episodes in its new, Friday slot.
In autumn 2005, producer Maike Tatzig took over the role of the director of Georg Uecker from episode 46, according to official information because of Uecker's scheduling problems. According to a rumor, however, internal displeasure with Uecker's external image should at least have had its share. This would also explain why in the above For the anniversary episode, all excerpts with Uecker were removed, in some cases other camera perspectives were used for the reviews and even instructions from the game director Uecker were replaced by specially newly synchronized ones from Tatzig.
On April 20, 2006, the stage area was doubled. The Schillereck pub was set up as a venue next to Cordula Stratmann's apartment so that the program could take place in a meaningful way without Cordula Stratmann, who was suspended for some episodes due to a baby break in the form of a “weight loss diet” . "Owner" is Cordula's friend Bernhard Hoëcker . The stages were at right angles to each other. In order to be able to use both of them in one broadcast without having to convert them, a revolving grandstand was constructed.
Cordula Stratmann announced that after the summer break in 2007, which began in April at the request of the producers, she no longer wanted to participate in the format. From November 26, 2010, Sat.1 showed the seventh season (six episodes) on Schillerstrasse on Friday evenings. Since the fifth season, Jürgen Vogel has been the new main tenant on Schillerstrasse in place of Cordula Stratmann . Since January 2009, the program has been broadcast in 16: 9 widescreen format .
Due to bad ratings, the last edition of Schillerstraße ran at the end of February 2011. No further episodes of the improv show are planned at the moment.
International success
After the surprisingly great success in front of a German audience, the format is marketed internationally. The rights were sold, for example, to the US media group FOX , which wants to release the program for the United States, the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand and Canada . In addition, the rights were sold to France , Italy , Spain , Belgium , the Netherlands , Finland , Romania , Hungary , Israel and Turkey . Since September 13, 2009, the program has also been running in Russia under the name Южное Бутово (Yuzhnoye butowo), alluding to the district of the same name in southern Moscow .
Trivia
In September 2014 RTL broadcast four episodes of the TV series Hotel Home: Please disturb! which, according to the FAZ, was "a lukewarm new edition of Schillerstraße " and was nevertheless announced by RTL as the "first improv sitcom on German television".
