Keep on Running - To hell with Penne is a German music - comedy from 1991 directed by Holm Dressler . Showmaster and entertainer Thomas Gottschalk worked on the script. The film is a far-reaching homage to the German music and hit clothes of the 1960s and 1970s, and the storyline is set in this contemporary color.

action

Landsberg , late 1960s: High school graduate Michael, who lives in town with his father and little sister Fruzzi, is about to take his final exams and dreams of a musical career with his boys from the band "Sunny Boys" as well as one Job as a radio presenter . But this is a long way off, as Michael is anything but good at school and his father threatened him that he could say goodbye to his plans for the future if he failed his Abitur. Additional distraction is added when Micha falls in love with the pretty half-Italian Raffaela from the town's ice cream parlor.

In the further course, Michael can rely on his somewhat strange bandmates, who are also classmates, who support him in learning. Initially, this did not have the desired effect, but the guys then resorted to less legal methods. Musically there is competition in the meantime, as the Rockybilly-like Richy is preparing with his own band to dig Michael and the "Sunny Boys" off the ground and is not too good to challenge them again and again. And also in love affairs some clouds gather when the attractive Tracy in her mid-forties arrives in town and tries to win Michael over in terms of career and then to seduce him. Raffaela is offended, leaves Micha and takes revenge on Tracy in her own way. It is only thanks to Fruzzi and a little trick that the two slowly get closer.

It is also a ruse that helps Michael in the all-important math work so that he passes it and thus also the Abitur. When he got the chance to work as a radio DJ, luck seemed perfect. But Michael cannot forget Raffaela and so he turns to her live on the air with a flaming declaration of love. In the end, he kills two birds with one stone: he and Raffaela get back together and those in charge of the station are also enthusiastic about him.

At the end this will be celebrated with a big party at which the "Sunny Boys" give a live concert. And in the epilogue, an off-speaker explains how all of the participants find their future happiness in a somewhat bizarre way.

Reviews

“In the wild 60's, two suburban bands have a bitter fight. Nostalgic and funny memories of days gone by from the pen of media darling Tommy Gottschalk. "

- Kino.de

“A teenage comedy set in the 1960s, irrelevant in every respect, about the needs of a high school graduate who is lovesick because he is misunderstood. A sterile, in places badly exaggerated film, which mainly exploits contemporary music, but does not illuminate the background of that time. "

“Among other things, Thomas Gottschalk worked on the script for 'Keep On Running' and tried to remember his own youth. There is hardly a cliché missing in teenage clothes, but at least the soundtrack is lively [...] Conclusion: Typical German teenage clothes! "

Trivia

  • Keep on Running was one of the few films and, for a long time, one of the last collaborations between the Dressler / Gottschalk duo, who already jointly Wetten, dass ..? or Tender Chaoten II realized. In the following year 1992 both ended their collaboration at Gottschalk Late Night ( RTL ) due to artistic differences until 2004.
  • In the film there are some autobiographical reminiscences related to Gottschalk, such as growing up in Bavaria, the passion for the music of the 1960s and 1970s and the career as a radio DJ after school. Gottschalk himself also has a cameo appearance in the film : as a Latin teacher during Michael's high school examination.
  • The film's soundtrack is enriched with an abundance of music of the 1960s popular music, from the eponymous piece of the Spencer Davis Group on Songs by Lovin 'Spoonful , The Troggs , The Byrds , Percy Sledge , Procol Harum , The Moody Blues and the Rolling Stones to towards The Mamas and the Papas . Michelle Phillips, a member of the latter band, is also part of the ensemble.
