Das Rad is a German animated short film by Chris Stenner , Arvid Uibel and Heidi Wittlinger from 2001.

action

The two stone people, Hew and Kew, lead a quiet life that is only given variety by the constant humid and demossed Hew. The smaller Kew finds a round stone disc that he keeps playing with. The centuries fly by, in the distance both stone creatures see people building huts, later a “caveman” appears in front of Kew and sees the stone disc, but is called away by another person.

More centuries passed. A field road emerges in front of Hew and Kew, on which a dealer breaks the wooden wheel of his car, which he swears for another wooden wheel. Kew realizes that the wheel is the key to all development. The road next to both stone creatures is paved . Huge skyscrapers and monstrous cities emerge in rapid succession in the landscape . The building development stops shortly before both stone creatures. The skyscrapers are disappearing as quickly as they were created. The landscape is growing over again. Hew is now plagued by lichens and mosses again.

production

The wheel was created in 2000 while Stenner, Uibel and Wittlinger were studying at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy . The two stone creatures consisted of wooden bodies and eyebrows made of latex and were shot in stop motion while the surroundings were animated on the computer.

Arvid Uibel died in 2000 at the age of 23 while filming, before post-production began. Stenner and Wittlinger dedicated Das Rad to him with the line “for Arvid”.
