Jeffrey Blitz (born 1969 in Ridgewood , New Jersey ) is an American film and television director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Jeffrey Blitz grew up as the son of a conservative Jewish family in Ridgewood, New Jersey. His mother, a pediatrician, was from Argentina while his father is a psychologist. In 1990 he received his Bachelor of Arts and 1991 his Masters from Johns Hopkins University . In 1997 he graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts .

In 2002 his debut film, Spellbound, appeared about a spelling competition and its protagonists. The film was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2003 Academy Awards, but was defeated by Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine .

His second film, Rocket Science , was released in 2007 and won the Sundance Film Festival's Dramatic Directing Prize in 2009. In 2009 he also won an Emmy for the subsequent stress relief of the office .
