Inja is an Australian-South African short film directed by Steve Pasvolsky from 2002.
action
In the colony of South Africa, the young Xhosa boy Thembile lovingly takes care of an abandoned dog on the farm of White John. He tames him, makes him a collar and wants to make him a friend. Johannes watches him and the dog and one day orders Thembile to put the dog in a sack. Thembile reluctantly complies. Johannes ties up the sack and finally steps on him. Inside, the howling of the dog can be heard. Finally, Johannes forces Thembile at gunpoint to open the sack - the dog flees from Thembile.
Ten years go by and South Africa has now become an independent republic. Thembile has grown up and is still on Johannes' farm. The dog is also still on the farm, obeys Johannes and repeatedly and aggressively drives away anyone who comes near him. One day Thembile and Johannes set out to repair the farm's fences. Since Thembile does not drive the fence posts into the ground with the hammer strong enough, Johannes shows him how to do it correctly. He collapses. Thembile fetches essential medicine for him, but cannot give it to him because the dog is defending Johannes. Johannes instructs Thembile to shoot the dog. Thembile remains undecided.
