Katedra (German Cathedral ) is a Polish computer-animated short film directed by Tomasz Bagiński from 2002.
action
A pilgrim arrives at a monumental cathedral that appears to be made of organic material. He opens the huge gate and steps into the building - the gate slams behind him. With the help of his pilgrim staff, the pilgrim lights his way. It becomes clear that the building consists of tree or root-like structures into which faces are interwoven. Some of them look after the pilgrim.
The pilgrim reaches the end of the cathedral. It is unfinished and stands open on a cliff. The pilgrim looks down at the abyss, where areas with tree stumps appear. He lingers. A huge planet is slowly moving sideways; a sun-like planet behind it shines bright light on the cathedral. The light hits the faces of the cathedral turning away and finally reaches the pilgrim. His arm is torn from the pilgrim's stick and root-like loops are knocked out of himself. A short time later the pilgrim has grown together with the cathedral.
production
Katedra was Bagiński's second film after Rain (1998) and the first one he completed as an employee of the CGI company Platige Image. For Katedra he worked with science fiction writer Jacek Dukaj , who shortened his short story of the same name from 2000 to a single storyline for the film.
Katedra was completed in April 2002 and had its premiere on October 16, 2002. The film was well received and later shown in Polish cinemas as a supporting film in front of Minority Report and Signs .
Awards
Katedra was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 2003 , but couldn't beat The Chubbchubbs! push through.
