Callionima is a genus of butterflies from the family of swarmers (Sphingidae).

features

The small moths of the genus have a noticeably uniform appearance. They all have brown fore wings with a sickle-shaped wing tip. There is a silvery-white iridescent discal spot on each of the forewings. The wing pattern can be very complex depending on the species and is used to camouflage the moths on the forest floor between leaves. The hind wings have a striking bright orange basic color. The morphology of the genitals is similar to that of the genus Erinnyis .

The caterpillars are only known of a few species . They have a long and slender body that tapers towards the head. There are a pair of longitudinal stripes on the sides of the body. The anal horn is stout.

Occurrence and way of life

The genus has been identified from Florida , Mexico and Costa Rica , among others . However, the species status of the individual species is still partly unclear, which is why the distribution of the individual species is sometimes uncertain. The well-known caterpillars feed on dog poison plants (Apocynaceae).
