Dukaj's works have been translated from Polish into Russian , Czech , English and Hungarian .

A special place in Dukaj's work is the symbolic-fantastic novel Wroniec (made-up word, German for example Der Krähenmann ) , published in 2009 . The novel portrays the experiences and trauma of a child during and shortly after the imposition of martial law in the People's Republic of Poland in December 1981. In short, dream sequences not dissimilar to flashbacks, sometimes deliberately in the style of fairy tales, the violence of the police state with ruthlessly brutal special task forces and omnipresent informers. Faced with the brutal, impoverished, colorless world of a large Polish city and the brutality of the unjust state of the early 1980s, the little boy withdraws into his dream world and, with the help of the resistance fighters, frees his family members who had been kidnapped by the state security. The title figure Krähenmann symbolically embodies the military junta of General Wojciech Jaruzelski , who, after its name Wojskowa Rada Ocalenia Narodowego (Military Councilor of National Salvation), was popularly abbreviated as "Wrona" (German: Krähe ). The novel moves stylistically between allegorical prose miniatures in the style of Zbigniew Herbert's Mr. Cogito , the South American prose of magical realism and a metaphorical-lyrical narrative style in the style of Michael Ende . In view of the numerous allusions to the language used by the People's Republic of Poland at the time , the novel can hardly be translated into other languages.

His novel Starość aksolotla , published in 2015, was adapted in 2020 by the Belgian Netflix series Into the Night .
