action

Johnny Flynton has been a boxer since he was 13. He is married to Samantha and the young couple lives secluded in a small town. They have no contact with the neighbors, so over time old Mrs. Derouville developed reservations about the boxer. He is the great boxing hope of the place, is junior champion of the year and will soon contest his first title fight. Before that, an exhibition match is planned as part of a celebration in the boxing hall of the village, at which Johnny should not make his opponent, the amateur Artie Duane, look too bad.

When Johnny comes home after training, Samantha tells him that she is pregnant. Johnny is pleased, even if it means that both of them will socialize more, their child shouldn't grow up isolated from everything. Johnny therefore promises to contact Mrs. Derouville after the big price war and offer to repair her fence. At the exhibition match, Johnny's opponent Artie appears with his whole family. Because Johnny notices that the young wife in particular is very desperate, that Artie has no chance against him, he lets Artie land a few hits and whispers to him punch instructions during the fight. This causes Artie to appear more and more confident and hit Johnny, who doesn't defend himself, harder and harder until he finally has a bleeding wound. Because Artie doesn't change his tactics, Johnny finally sees red and hits Artie out of his mind, who collapses covered in blood. The audience is horrified and Johnny is terrified and desperate of himself. He runs off as he is. Arriving at Samantha, he announces that he wants to stop boxing. He'd rather work as a mechanic. Samantha calms him down and makes him realize that she will always love him, no matter what he works as. He throws her euphorically and happily over his shoulder and turns in circles with her, laughing. Samantha hits the corner of the kitchen cupboard with her head violently. Johnny is desperate because Samantha is bleeding profusely and shows no sign of life. He can't use the phone because of all the excitement and runs to Mrs. Derouville. She sees the tall, blood-smeared man in front of her door and doesn't call the ambulance, but the sheriff. He finds Johnny crying with the dead Samantha. The body is taken away and Johnny is led away in handcuffs.
