Paula van der Oest (* 1965 in Laag-Soeren , Netherlands ) is a Dutch director and screenwriter .

Life

She attended the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie, which she finished with the graduation short film Zinderend . The film was awarded the Tuschinski Film Award in 1988, at the time called “Cannon City Prijs”, as the academy's best thesis. After completing her studies, Van der Oest initially worked as an assistant director and in 1994 shot the short feature film Coma as part of the Lolamoviola series of the TV station VPRO , which was awarded the Golden Calf in the category Best televisiedrama at the 1994 Dutch Film Festival .

Her first feature film De nieuwe moeder was released in 1996 and received several awards. Her greatest international success to date was Three Furies & a Warm Brother (OT: Zus & zo ) in 2001 , which received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2003 , but could not prevail against nowhere in Africa .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Van der Oest was married to Theu Boermans , who had a role in some of her films. The marriage has a daughter. Van der Oest's sister Sandra van der Oest is a film producer.
