Consultation for Love (Original title: Appointment for Love ) is an American comedy film from 1941. Directed by William A. Seiter , Charles Boyer and Margaret Sullavan play a married couple who only find each other when it almost looks like as if their marriage had failed.

André Cassil is a successful playwright . His latest piece is also very well received by the audience. At the premiere, he notices a young woman in the front row who is strangely slumped in her seat. When he tries to help her, he can hardly believe his eyes when he realizes that she fell asleep during his play. It turns out that her name is Jane Alexander and that she is an intern at a clinic. She explains very firmly to him that love is only a chemical reaction. It is precisely because of her strange demeanor that Cassil is interested in her and the very next day, pretending to have heart problems, visits the clinic where she is employed. In fact, he gets Jane Alexander to examine him. She does this with her own thoroughness and comes to the conclusion that he is very healthy. She declined an invitation on the grounds that she was on emergency duty. His persistence towards her pays off over time, however, so that Jane accepts his marriage proposal on the grounds that she wants to explore the experiment of marriage and what is really behind it. On his wedding day, of all times, a Nancy Benson, a former girlfriend, contacted André Cassil. During a weak hour he had given her an almost marriage vow long ago. She asks him to pick her up from the train station. In order to hide the arrival of Nancy from his wife, André had the crazy idea of ​​showing Jane that a fire had broken out at the train station and that he had to help put it out. Ultimately, he can get the wailing Nancy to go home again. Through a phone call, Jane has since found out that there was no fire at the train station, but she does not show anything to her newly wedded husband. The next call is for Jane and orders her back to New York because the clinic urgently needs her help. What a wedding night!

Andrés' next step also goes wrong. Jane doesn't want to live with him in the extra rented apartment on the 17th floor. She has already taken up residence on the 22nd floor. When Jane explains to her husband that she has to keep the night watch in the clinic again, André invites Meredith, an actress, to join him. When Jane unexpectedly visits him at a theater rehearsal where a love scene is being rehearsed, he doesn't feel very comfortable in his skin. Marriage is drifting apart. When André waits for hours for Jane one night, he has serious suspicions of adultery . Feldman-Blum Corp. Bus-Fekete bought the film rights to the book for $ 8,000, with director Otto Preminger slated for a film adaptation. Later you offered the rights Howard Hughes , Warner Brothers and Twentieth Century Fox , but without success. Eventually the script was sold to Universal for $ 50,000 . The finished film was screened on a trial basis in Glendale on October 22, 1941 to test audience reactions. The New York Times reported in July 1946 that this film was one of the first American films during World War II to feature German civilians. Margaret Sullavan, Charles Boyer and director William A. Seiter had previously worked together on the Universal film Back Street . Charles Boyer spoke about his role on a Lux Radio broadcast on February 23, 1942. The broadcast was repeated on May 1, 1944.

The lexicon of international film said that “despite the skillfully presented situation comedy, it is a not very original tabloid comedy.” Bosley Crowther of the New York Times said, “That the story no longer even with Charles Boyer's charm than skin and bones suggest that refinement is as thinly sown as a thin layer on an old frame that rattles. This man-woman story, which leads to marital ties and in which a romantic playwright sees a soul mate in a doctor determined solely by the mind, is incomprehensible. Why, of all people, she attracts him so strongly (except that it is Margaret Sullavan) remains a secret. The talent of two likeable stars is more likely to be wasted here. This story has no more originality or spirit than a ten year old joke. Of course, the film also offers a number of places to laugh, the rest, however, is garnished with stars. ” Variety came to the general conclusion that consultation hours for love were a well-constructed film that offered good entertainment. At the 1942 Academy Awards , Bernard B. Brown was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Sound category, but it went to Jack Whitney and the drama Lord Nelson's Last Love ( That Hamilton Woman ).
