Gus Schilling

August "Gus" Eugene Schilling (born June 20, 1908 in New York City , † June 16, 1957 in Los Angeles ) was an American theater and film actor .

Life

Initially traveling as a vaudeville and burlesque artist, Gus Schilling performed three times on New York's Broadway between 1928 and 1931 , before joining Orson Welles ' Mercury Theater and appearing in several radio plays. From 1940 he also appeared in American films and was mostly seen in comical supporting roles, such as in the film musicals In der Hölle ist der Teufel ist! (1941) And You Were Never More Enchanting (1942), where he played Adolphe Menjou's secretary alongside Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth . But he also appeared in a total of five films by Orson Welles: Citizen Kane (1941), The Shine of the House of Amberson (1942), The Lady of Shanghai (1947), Macbeth - The Kingslayer (1948) and In the Signs of Evil (1958 ). The latter was only published after Schilling's death.

Schilling was married to the burlesque artist Betty Rowland. However, the marriage ended in divorce. Schilling, who was a heavy smoker, died of a heart attack in his Hollywood apartment in 1957, four days before his 49th birthday .
