William Garity

William E. "Bill" Garity (born April 2, 1899 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York , † September 16, 1971 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American inventor and technician who founded the Pratt Institute around 1921 visited before starting work for Lee De Forest . He worked with DeForest until 1927 on the further development of the phonofilm .

Garity is best known for his job at Walt Disney Studios , where he developed the Multiplan camera together with Ub Iwerks in 1937

In 1940 Garity discovered the Fantasound , an early stereophony - surround sound system for the Disney film Fantasia (1940). For this achievement he was awarded an honorary Oscar together with Walt Disney and JNA Hawkins in 1942 . After leaving Disney, Garity became vice president and production manager for Walter Lantz Productions. He was inducted into the Disney Legends program in 1999 .
