Tom Howard

Thomas William Howard , also Thomas Howard or Tommy Howard (born March 27, 1910 in Northamptonshire , England , United Kingdom , † August 30, 1985 in Bushey , Hertfordshire , England) was a British special effects designer . He won two Academy Awards .

Life

Tom Howard was a well-respected British special effects designer who gained prestige in particular for his work in the 1940s. He was originally a theater projectionist until he moved to Denham Studios and worked under the direction of Alexander Korda , a Hungarian film director. Howard would be a major player in the making of many Korda films, including the perennial classic Lawrence of Arabia . He became responsible for many effects. His most memorable works were Mervyn LeRoya Quo vadis? (1951) and Stanley Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). In 1959, Howard won his second Oscar at the 31st Academy Awards for George Pal 's Little Thumble and worked on other films such as Until the Blood Freezes (1963) and others. a. He settled near MGM Studios in Bushey town with his wife Dorothy and children. Howard has worked on more than 150 films, but only completed 82 of them. He died on 30 August 1985 at the age of 75 at his home in Bushey , Hertfordshire at a stroke .
