Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt is a 1941 American animated short film directed by Friz Freleng .

action

Bugs Bunny sits chewing a carrot by a river and reads The Song of Hiawatha aloud - the story of an Indian who hunts a hare. Promptly an Indian comes rowing up the river and Bugs Bunny realizes that he must be the rabbit himself. He's escaping. The Indian Hiawatha is indeed planning to catch a hare. He has put on a large kettle with water and now follows a rabbit trail, which in turn leads directly to the kettle: Bugs Bunny takes a bath in it and is delighted when Hiawatha lights a fire under the kettle, since warm bath water is better than cold. When he dreams that he too has an appetite for rabbits, and Hiawatha puts cut carrots into the water, he notices that he should be boiled and flees.

Hiawatha starts a new tactic and tries to tie up Bugs Bunny. In the end he ends up tied to a tree trunk, Bugs Bunny performs an Indian dance around him, kisses him enthusiastically on the forehead and disappears. Although for a short time it looks like Hiawatha will be able to kill Bugs Bunny, in the end the Indian falls rudely down a cliff and the hare rejoices. Hiawatha angrily breaks his bow and drives away, while Bugs Bunny quotes that very ending of Hiawatha's song . However, the Indian comes back briefly and kisses the stunned rabbit on the forehead.
