Emil Newman

Emil Newman (born January 20, 1911 in New Haven , Connecticut , † August 30, 1984 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American film composer and conductor.

Life

Newman comes from a Russian immigrant family. His nine siblings included his older brother Alfred and Lionel , born in 1916, both of whom were also known as composers of film music. Emil Newman is thus the uncle of Randy , David and Thomas Newman , who have also dedicated themselves to film music.

From 1940 Newman was active as musical director in the film business and as such accompanied more than 170 film productions until the 1970s. In the early 1940s he made his debut as an independent film composer and as such has worked on more than 40 films and a few television series. For his work on Adopted Glück (Adopted Happiness) , he was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best film music in 1942 .

Newman was married and had two children until his wife's death in 1972.
