In 1986 Gabriele Heider opened her studio on her parents' estate Friedrichstein in Sankt Augustin, where her father ran a large cattle farm. Heider became known for abstract, large-format, black-and-white “cow pictures” in which she further developed the principle of fur notes, as it is known from herd books , in painting. In 1995 she won the art competition for the design of the library in the new building of the Deutsche Telekom AG headquarters in Bonn. In addition to AR Penck and Markus Lüpertz , u. a. and Daniel Buren and Mario Merz participated in the artistic design of the new building. "The master student of Daniel Spoerri enlarged her paintings, which repeatedly work with the ornamentation of cowhide drawings, to the monumental: The work with its immanent change of view of series and individual, ornament and mass is definitely one of the better achievements for the new house of the large company." For other works, especially the "Herd books" (1992–1996), Heider has used canvases since the late 1980s to a large extent, as well as sheets, pillows and tablecloths from the inherited trousseau of her ancestors, which she had previously spread out in the cow stalls the cattle leave their tracks of dung and dirt on it. In the mid-90s, Gabriele Heider began a new creative phase with the so-called "circle pictures" with a strong turn to color, which continued from 2001 in the field of action painting . The composed underground structures are still there, even if mostly only sketchily indicated or painted over. In the most recent works, the original rectangular structure has been replaced by prints of old enlarged engravings such as B. Cologne Cathedral or temple complexes from antiquity as a background and contrast for the paint that drips, bursts or pours on the canvas.
