Rhythm in the Ranks is a 1941 American animated short film directed by George Pal .

action

Soldier Jan overslept and therefore comes too late to line up. He and numerous other comrades belong to the red-white-blue army. Because he is the last to appear, he has to pull the cannon as a punishment during the subsequent march. During the march, the soldiers pass a lake on which a pretty girl is skating. Jan forgets his duty and goes ice skating with the girl. Thereupon he is demoted by his superior General Planck and has to return to the camp. As a punishment, he is supposed to whitewash the barracks. While the other soldiers march off as planned, Jan receives a declaration of war from the Screwballs. They put the surprised General Planck and his men to flight, but Jan manages to defeat the Screwballs on his own and thus rehabilitate himself.

production

Rhythm in the Ranks was animated as a puppet trick in stop motion . Like other Pal films, for example Tulips Shall Grow , this film also makes reference to the Netherlands, so the soldiers wear uniforms in the colors of the Dutch flag. After fleeing Germany in 1933, Pal settled in the Netherlands and founded an animation studio there in 1934 before moving to the USA in 1940. Rhythm in the Ranks was released on December 26, 1941 as part of the Puppetoons Theatrical Cartoon Series. In the film, Raymond Scott's song The Toy Trumpet can be heard.

Awards

Rhythm in the Ranks was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1942 , but could not prevail against The Heartless Savior . It was Pal's first Oscar nomination.
