Raoul Pene Du Bois
Raoul Pene Du Bois (* 29. November 1914 in New York City , New York ; † 1. January 1985 ) was an American scene and costume designer on Broadway and in film.
Life
At the age of 14, Raoul Pene Du Bois was already making costumes for Broadway revues by the Ziegfeld Follies . From 1934 he was regularly engaged for major Broadway shows, such as the musical Du Barry Was a Lady , for which he was also responsible for the set design. By the early 1980s, numerous other works as a set and costume designer followed, including for the musicals Carmen Jones , Gypsy and No, No, Nanette .
In the 1940s he was also involved in a number of film productions at Paramount Pictures . In 1942 he was nominated together with Stephen Seymour for an Oscar in the category Best Set Design of a Color Film for Louisiana Purchase . In 1945, together with Hans Dreier and Ray Moyer, he received another nomination in this very category for the film The Dreams of a Woman . For The Pirate and the Lady (1944) he designed the costumes for Joan Fontaine . Pene Du Bois, who won two Tony Awards , was last used as a set and costume designer on Broadway for the musical Sugar Babies , which premiered in 1979. He died in 1985 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York from a stroke .
