John Hughes (production designer)

John Hughes (born May 23, 1882 in Kansas City , Missouri , † October 2, 1954 in Los Angeles ) was an American film set designer .

Life

From 1921 John Hughes worked as a production designer, as a so-called art director , for film in Hollywood . Until the early 1930s, he worked for various film studios. In 1934 he got a permanent contract with Warner Brothers . There he worked under the direction of well-known directors such as Michael Curtiz , Raoul Walsh , Howard Hawks and John Huston . In the course of his career, in which he was also mentioned as J. J. Hughes or John J. Hughes in the credits, he was nominated three times for the Oscar in the category Best Production Design, among others for Sergeant York , but always went empty-handed. By 1951 he was involved in more than 90 film productions. He had a child with his wife Corinne. He died in Los Angeles in 1954 at the age of 72 and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale .
