Ernest Wilbur "Bud" Silvertooth (born November 27, 1916 in Portland , Oregon , † September 24, 2000 in Bellingham (Washington) ) was an American physicist who worked for Paramount Studios Engineering Dept. worked. For his design and calculations for a relay that enables capacitors to emit significantly more usable light, Silvertooth was awarded an Oscar in the Oscar for technical merit category at the 1942 Academy Awards .

Life

Silvertooth grew up in Long Beach , California . Even as a child, a test by Lewis M. Terman showed that he was gifted. At the age of 14 he met Albert Einstein and argued with him about his theory of relativity .

During his studies, Silvertooth specialized in physics and received his bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology , better known as "Caltech," an elite private university in Pasadena , Los Angeles County , which specializes in natural and engineering sciences . His thesis was so extraordinary that it caught the attention of Paramount Studios, who offered him a demanding position that, in the broadest sense, revolved around perfecting special effects for the studio's films. Since this position was very well endowed, in contrast to the fees at universities, Silvertooth could not resist this offer during the time of the Great Depression .

In addition to various other awards, the Oscar in the field of "Technical Merit" was a special recognition of his work. Later on, Silvertooth was enlisted in the Air Force and worked in the Aerospace Corp. think tank . Silvertooth experimented with Stefan Marinov on the anisotropy of light due to the movement of the solar system through space. His specialist articles were rejected by most of the relevant journals, he was of the opinion to have proven the ether and disproved the theory of relativity .

Silvertooth died in 2000 at the age of 84 in a nursing home in Bellingham. His wife Muriel, to whom he told little about his work, survived him.
