Edward J. Kay

Edward J. Kay (born November 27, 1898 in New York City , † December 22, 1973 in Los Angeles County , California ) was an American composer for film music who was nominated for five Academy Awards.

Career

Kay began his career in the Hollywood film industry in the mid- 1930s and has worked as a composer or musical director in around 400 film productions. He made his debut as musical director in 1936 in the film Federal Agent (1936) directed by Sam Newfield .

He received his first Oscar nomination in 1942 in the category Best Score in a Drama for the film Lord of the Zombies - Isle of the Living Dead by Jean Yarbrough . 1943 followed a nomination for the best film music in the drama Klondike Fury by William K. Howard . In 1945, Kay was nominated for his work in the music film Belita tanzt ( Lady, Let's Dance ) by Frank Woodruff . The following year he was nominated twice, for the music film Sunbonnet Sue by Ralph Murphy and for the comedy GI Honeymoon by Phil Karlson .

His other works include the horror film The Ape Man (1943) by William Beaudine , the Western Riding the California Trail (1947) by William Nigh and the film drama The Checkered Coat (1948) by Edward L. Cahn . Most recently he was musical director of the crime film Im Dschungel der Großstadt (1958) by Paul Landres .

According to the Internet Movie Database , Kay also composed the electronic music for the science fiction film The Creation of the Humanoids (1962), which he co-produced under the pseudonym "IFM", but there is no evidence of this.
