The film tells of Mortimer, an American Standardbred horse who was born on a Californian breeding farm. Even as a foal, he is examined by a trainer who decides whether he should be used as a trotter, gallop or as a show horse. Mortimer is said to be a trotter. The differences between the three types are shown. The special rules are also explained. It shows Mortimer's training and his first race.
