Ice-Capades is an American comedy film with musicals from 1941 . Based on a story by Isabel Dawn and Boyce DeGaw, the film was produced by Republic Pictures .

action

New York newsreel cameraman Bob Clemens is an outright misogynist. He is commissioned to film the performance of Swiss figure skater Karen Vadja in Lake Placid . Clemens missed his plane and was unable to deliver any film material. He thinks that all figure skaters look the same and goes to Central Park to film some of the ice skaters at random. He chooses Marie Bergen, a Swedish immigrant whose visa has expired.

Clemens films Marie with boredom and does not pay attention, so Marie can be clearly recognized. The newsreel is seen by manager Larry Herman, who immediately recognizes Marie's talent and attractiveness. He wants to make her the star of his ice cream revue Ice-Capades . Jackson and Reed from the Immigration Service are among the audience. Since Marie is featured in the newsreel as Karen Vadja, Herman contacts Vadja's agent and signs a contract. When the figure skater comes to New York, Herman is appalled to see an eccentric and horse-faced woman. Herman cancels the ice cream revue and is suing the production company that makes the newsreels. Director Ellis blames Bob and his assistant Colonna for the bad publicity. The two now want to find Marie and let Ellis make a star himself.

Marie escapes because she thinks Clemens and Colonna are immigration officials. But the two men find her in the choir of the ice revue, in which she sings along. To stay in the country, Marie has to marry an American citizen. Since Clemens is the only unmarried man in the area, Ellis tries to persuade him to marry Marie. The die-hard bachelor refuses. But he explains that he feels something for Marie and that under such circumstances he could not marry her. Ellis tells Marie that Clemens filmed her without her knowledge and would have to go to jail for it if she didn't appear on the show. Marie, meanwhile in love with Clemens, accepted.

Before the premiere, Marie is arrested backstage by Jackson and Reed. Clemens learns a lie from Ellis and knocks him down. Then he informs Jackson and Reed that he wants to marry Marie. Herman promises to have a big wedding reception. Marie goes on the ice with the other skaters and performs the grand finale, Legend of the Falls .

Reviews

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times criticized the fact that instead of the expected glittering ice film, a boring and silly story, which takes place especially in offices and dark rooms, is delivered.

Awards

Cy Feuer was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Film Music in 1942 .

background

The premiere took place on August 20, 1941.

The film was inspired by the show of the same name performed from 1940. British figure skater Belita , star of the show, was supposed to star in the film as well. But differences with the studio meant that Dorothy Lewis got the lead role. Belita was then used in her film debut for a number.

With Ice Capades Revue a follow-up film was shot 1,942th
