Duell in den Wolken (Original title: The Tarnished Angels ) is an American melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk from 1957. The black and white film is based on the novel Wendemarke (English: Pylon ) by William Faulkner from 1935.
action
Roger Shumann was a brilliant aviator in World War I , but the days of this glory are long gone: in the 1930s, during the Great Depression , he roamed the American provinces as a Barnstorming pilot. At Shumann's side are his wife LaVerne, a skydiver , their son Jack and the mechanic Jiggs. Although Roger actually loves his family, he mostly treats them badly. Burke Devlin, a reporter from New Orleans , is interested in the former flying hero and his adventurous lifestyle. Soon, however, Burke is uncomfortably aware of how much Shumann's family is suffering, and soon the reporter feels drawn to the neglected LaVerne. On the one hand, LaVerne feels the chance of a new life with Burke, but still loves Roger. Meanwhile, he tries to get a plane from the aging millionaire and industrial tycoon Matt Ord, despite the poor budget - in return, Ord is said to be allowed to “spend” a few hours with the pretty LaVerne. The mechanic Jiggs gets angry with Roger's behavior.
To prove his love for his wife and to bring in the prize money for a new life, Roger Shumann takes part in a race, although his plane is only poorly repaired and he is warned. Roger wins the race and takes the big prize money, but has an accident while landing. After the accident, the widowed LaVerne rejects Burke, who has since been dismissed as a reporter because of his affair, because she feels guilty about Roger. However, the widow has not yet given up hope of an orderly life and is reconciled with Burke. LaVerne moves back to Iowa with her son Jack .
reception
Like many other Douglas Sirk films, Duel in the Clouds was not well received by critics at the time. Bosley Crowther of the New York Times wrote that the film was written “badly and cheaply”, and the top-class cast would also play miserable and absurd. "The sentimentalities are inflated [...]", judged Crowther. William Faulkner, on the other hand, was satisfied with the film adaptation of the autobiographical novel, which was influenced by Faulkner's love of aviation, for example. It is the best film adaptation of one of his works.
Over the decades, Douglas Sirk's work has been revalued and so Duell in den Wolken has received largely positive reviews today. David Thomson called it Sirk's best film, especially as it perfectly reflected the novel's mixture of poetry and hokum . Well-known directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Peter Bogdanovich also highlighted the influence of the film. The lexicon of international film was largely positive: "Exciting, perhaps a little simplistic film adaptation of a Faulkner novel, remarkable in terms of direction and camera work."
