action

Germany during the Biedermeier period : the annual court concert at the royal court in Immendingen threatens to be canceled because the singer Pinelli is vocal indisposed because of lovesickness. Prince Serenissimus therefore sends for the singer Belotti in Munich . At the same time, the young Christine Holm arrives in Immendingen. She is looking for her father, who is said to be from Immendingen, and already at the border makes the acquaintance of Lieutenant Walter von Arnegg, who falls in love with her. When Christine is discredited as a light lady by a fellow traveler, Walter defends her and pretends to be his bride in order to protect her honor. Walter and Christine have a rendezvous.

Christine has the only reference to her father in a poem that her mother always carried with her. It comes from the poor poet Knips, who writes poems for little money for lovers of the place. Christine visits him in his attic and tells him about her search. Her mother was once a singer at court and Knips knew her briefly. He only knows that her father was a high-ranking man from the royal court. Before Christine can do any further research, she is expelled from the country because Minister of State von Arnegg wants to end his son's improper relationship as soon as possible. Walter escorts Christine to the border. The rider from Munich arrives there and confesses that he has not found the Belotti in Munich. It turns out that Belotti is the stage name of Christine, who is now brought back to the court of Immendingen with an escort of honor and there presented to the sovereign Serenissimus.

Christine can now continue the search for her father, but her mother's files are locked away in the city archives by order of State Minister von Arnegg. Christine now believes that Arnegg is her father and ends her relationship with Walter. During rehearsals for the court concert, she is astonishing because she knows the lyrics of the song, which was never performed outside of immense things - it was her mother's favorite song. During the concert, Serenissimus learns the name of Christine's mother and recognizes the similarity between the two women. After the concert, he offers Christine to stay at court as a chamber singer and to marry Walter, but Christine refuses because she could not marry her brother. Serenissimus then reveals that he is her father, and Christine and Walter become a couple. There is also a happy ending for Knips, because at Christine's instigation he is allowed to live at court in the future and is appointed court poet.

production

The shooting of The Court Concert took place from the end of August to mid-November 1936 at Veitshöchheim Castle near Würzburg and in the Ufa studio in Neubabelsberg . Johannes Heesters had previously been in front of the camera until April for the film Der Bettelstudent , his first film for UFA. Martha Eggerth was already a world-famous soprano at the time of filming . Tensions arose between the two main actors during the filming, as Eggerth's then partner Jan Kiepura also watched the filming on the set . In a scene in which Heesters and Eggerth were supposed to kiss, Eggerth refused to kiss the film, so the scene had to be repeated several times.

The poor poet , template for the scenes in Knips' attic

Eggerth and Heesters sing several songs in the film, including it is wonderful to be in love , you never think about it? and happiness, bliss . Edmund Nick took over the musical direction and the song editing, the lyrics are from Hans Bussmann , Kurt Heynicke , Eduard Mörike and Aldo von Pinelli .

The court concert had its premiere on December 16, 1936 in the Ufa-Palast Hamburg. The Berlin premiere took place two days later. In 1944 the same story was remade by Paul Verhoeven under the title Das kleine Hofkonzert .

Like the play on which it is based, the plot of the film refers to Carl Spitzweg's Biedermeier period. Knips' attic resembles the attic in the painting The Poor Poet in detail, just as the figure of the Knips is modeled after the poor poet himself. Fritz Maurischat created the buildings for the film, and Manon Hahn designed the costumes .

criticism

For the film service , the court concert was a "cheerful, amiable game with Spitzweg idylls, some sentimentalities and extensive singing parts: Martha Eggerth sings everywhere, even in the bathing water. "
