Stützen der Gesellschaft is a film drama by director Detlef Sierck from 1935. The literary film adaptation is based on the play Samfundets Støtter by the Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen . In the main role , Heinrich George embodies the wealthy and unscrupulous consul Karsten Bernick, who has nothing else in mind than that his son should one day take over his shipyard .

The rich consul Karsten Bernick is the proud owner of a shipyard. He directs all his actions and thoughts towards the fact that his son Olaf should take over his shipyard at a suitable time.

When Bernick's brother-in-law Johan Tönnessen, who has meanwhile become a wealthy farmer, reappears in his home country after 20 years of absence abroad, old rumors are circulating again, in which it is expressed that Dina, who lives in the house of the consul, is received illegitimate child of his. Bernick now turns the tables and spreads the suspicion that his brother-in-law Johan is the father of the child.

The film's plot becomes turbulent when Johan spontaneously makes the decision to go to America on a ship with Dina. Despite an upcoming storm, Bernick instructs the ship's captain to sail immediately. It happens as it has to: the ship capsizes and runs aground in heavy seas. What at that time no one knew that Bernick's son Olaf as a stowaway of on board not just as seaworthy is classifiable ship.

Bernick, who has noticed that his son was illegally aboard the ship, is killed when he desperately calls for his son and is then swept away by the surf and goes down. Johan at least manages to save Olaf.

Release dates and different film titles

The film premiered in Berlin on December 21, 1935 in Germany . It premiered in the USA about a year later, on November 6, 1936. The film was also released in France under the title Les piliers de la société , in Italy under the title Le colonne della società and in Portugal under the title Pilares da Sociedade .

Production notes

The shooting took place in September and October 1935. The filming locations were Potsdam , Hamburg and Bornholm (in Denmark ). Hans Minzloff and Otto Gülstorff were responsible for the film construction. Fred Lyssa was in charge of production and manufacturing.
