action

New York City towards the end of the 1920s: Samuel Fulton has become the richest man in the world through oil and gold deals, but the elderly gentleman no longer has a family to leave the inheritance to. As heirs, he finally decides on the descendants of his childhood sweetheart Millicent Blaisdell, which astonishes Fulton's lawyer, Mr. Norton. The millionaire explains: Since Millicent - the only woman he ever loved - rejected him as a young man, he moved out of grief from his hometown into the world and thus became a millionaire. Fulton fears, however, that the Blaisdell family might not get the inheritance well. To get to know the Blaisdells better, the millionaire returns to his small hometown in Vermont . Through a fake newspaper advertisement, Fulton ensures that he can move in as a subtenant with the family under the name John Smith .

Since they never actually wanted a subtenant, the Blaisdells are initially surprised, but they soon become friends with “Mr. John Smith ”. The Blaisdells are a friendly middle-class family: Charles owns a shop in town and teaches his three children Millicent, Roberta and Howard not to care about money and materialism. Still, mother Harriet secretly dreams of prosperity and a marriage of her daughter Millicent to Carl Pennock - the boorish, arrogant son of the richest family in town. Millicent doesn't like her mother's plans, however, and instead loves the nice but poor bartender Dan Stebbins, who works in the Blaisdells' shop. Also "Mr. Smith “starts working as a bartender in the Blaisedells store for a few dollars.

One evening, Millicent and Dan announce their engagement anyway. Fulton's attorney, Mr. Norton, appears only a little later and tells the Blaisdells that they have inherited US $ 100,000 from an unknown man. Because of the unexpected inheritance, the family, especially mother Harriet, goes nuts: within a few days they move into a villa with countless servants and sell their small business shop. Instead, father Charles - who actually wanted to maintain the modest lifestyle despite the inheritance - invests in the stock market. The eldest son Howard soon gets into gambling debt. Meanwhile, Dan dissolves his engagement to Millicent because he no longer considers himself good enough, whereupon Millicent soon meets again with Carl Pennock. "Mr. Smith, ”who is increasingly critical of the behavior of the family, managed to save Millicent and Howard twice from police raids, but unfortunately he was jailed twice in the process. As a result, Mr. Smith sinks in Harriet's reputation because she does not know the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment.

Because of his lovesickness, Dan wants to leave town to seek his fortune elsewhere - “Mr. Smith "aka Samuel Fulton feels reminded of his own life story and wants to prevent this. He arranges for a meeting between Millicent and Dan during a cinema screening, but there is a loud argument between the two. Millicent says the family's sudden wealth brought all bad things. "Mr. Smith “comforts the crying Millicent and takes her in his arms, whereupon the vicious village gossip quickly spreads the rumor that they are lovers with a huge age difference. Harriet then forces her daughter to announce her engagement to Carl Pennock. However, when the Pennocks learn at the engagement party that the Blaisdells have gambled away their entire legacy on the exchange, they quickly break the bond and leave the party.

The Blaisdells are embarrassed and have to return to their old, humble lifestyle - but everyone, maybe except for Mother Harriet, is happy. Dan and Millicent become a couple again. "Mr. Smith “leaves the family amicably and becomes multimillionaire Samuel Fulton again. He realizes that the Blaisdells now think of him as the grandfather he could have been.

Reviews

US film critic Dennis Schwartz said: “It is the most lighthearted film that melodrama master Douglas Sirk has ever made. He wants to show in a funny way that money is the root of all evil, or at least that money alone does not make you happy. ”The film is not one of Sirk's great works, but it offers“ charm and nostalgia ”and is consistently entertaining. Charles Coburn was "perfect" in his role as an old millionaire, while child star Gigi Perreau would steal every scene she appeared in.

The Lexicon of International Films wrote: “Moderately amusing comedy that depicts the American small-town milieu with sometimes biting humor and an obvious love-hate relationship. Outstanding: Charles Coburn (1877–1961) in the role of the grumpy benefactor. "
