Larry Gates (born September 24, 1915 in St. Paul , Minnesota , † December 12, 1996 in Sharon , Connecticut ) was an American actor . Gates has acted in numerous plays, films, and television series, mostly in supporting roles .

life and career

Gates began acting in student theater while studying at the University of Minnesota. In 1938 he went to New York to become an actor. He made his Broadway debut in 1939 in the play Speak of the Devil . He later played in plays like Das kleine Teehaus or Bell, Book and Candle, which was filmed in 1958 as My Bride is psychic . He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1963 for his supporting role in the court drama A Case of Libel . In addition to Broadway productions, he appeared in plays by Molière, Bernhard Shaw and, above all, Shakespeare, in whose plays he played Falstaff, Polonius and King Lear at various American Shakespeare festivals.

In addition to his work at the theater, his film career began with a first supporting role in 1952 in Glory Alley , a film that was not distributed in German-speaking countries. He became better known in 1956 with Die Demonischen and 1958 with The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof , in which he met the family doctor Dr. Baugh played. Many other supporting roles followed.

In addition to films, he appeared on television: in a few live shows and especially in numerous series, including Bonanza , Alfred Hitchcock Presents , A Thousand Miles of Dust and Mannix . From 1983 until his death, he played District Attorney HB Lewis in the soap opera Springfield Story . For this role he received an Emmy in 1985 . He was nominated three more times for an Emmy.

Larry Gates died of leukemia in 1996 at the age of 81 .
