The young savages (Original title: The Young Savages ) is an American feature film from 1961. The film is based on the novel Harlem Fieber ( A Matter of Conviction ) by Ed McBain , who published the novel in 1959 under his stage name Evan Hunter .

action

In the New York borough of Spanish Harlem, the blind 15-year-old Roberto Escalante is brutally stabbed to death by three young people of Italian origin under witnesses in broad daylight. After the crime, the perpetrators flee and throw away the weapons. Due to the large number of eyewitnesses, however, the three are caught quickly. The underage perpetrators Danny Di Pace, Arthur Reardon and Anthony “Vampyr” Aposto are members of the street gang “The Thunderbirds”, who regularly engage in bitter street fights with the hostile “Horsemen”, a Puerto Rican youth gang. Budding Governor Dan Cole is in favor of the death penalty in this case, as he hopes a harsh verdict will result in votes. He shares this opinion with the investigating prosecutor Hank Bell. At Roberto Escalante's funeral, his mother also demands justice through the death penalty.

However, Bell's wife Karin protests against the death penalty her husband is demanding. Danny is also the child of Bell's childhood sweetheart, Mary Di Pace. Hank Bell used to come from this area himself and only made it out of the ghetto with diligence. Bell eventually investigates both camps and makes an amazing discovery. At the trial, Bell takes the victim's sister and eyewitness, 16-year-old Louisa, into the crossfire in court.

It turns out that the murdered blind Roberto himself was a member of the "Horsemen" and, should the street fighting be interrupted by the police, the weapons of his gang members are hidden under his coat. A blind boy was not suspect and was never checked. So the Puerto Ricans always got away with it. It also turns out that Anthony is mentally confused and didn't even hit Danny with his knife. The main culprit falls on Reardon, who has to be in prison for at least 20 years. Anthony is admitted to a closed institution and Danny only receives a one-year juvenile prison sentence for aiding and abetting.

criticism

"Credible and uncompromising in the milieu drawing, but too superficial in the characterization of the characters." - Lexicon of international film

background

Telly Savalas made his feature film debut here.

In the film, the Italian gang is portrayed as a youngster , contrary to the Puerto Ricans, who dress very fashionably, similar to the British Teddy Boys .

Some names differ from the novel.
