Edward Anhalt
Edward Anhalt (born March 28, 1914 in New York City , New York , † September 3, 2000 in Pacific Palisades , California ) was an American screenwriter .
Life
Anhalt studied at Columbia University and worked as a staff screenwriter for television in the 1930s and 1940s . His first feature film as a scriptwriter was Irving Allen's B-movie Avalanche from 1946. He continued to write for smaller film productions until 1950, but then he and his then wife Edna Anhalt drafted the template for Elia Kazan's film noir Under Secret Orders , for which both co-wrote were awarded the Oscar . The couple received another Oscar nomination three years later for the thriller The Sniper by director Edward Dmytryk with Adolphe Menjou in the lead role.
In addition to his own works, he was also frequently commissioned with adaptations , including editing literary models by Frank Gill Slaughter , Irwin Shaw and Tom Wolfe for the screen. He received a second Oscar in 1964 for the script adaptation of the play Becket or the Glory of God by Jean Anouilh about the English bishop and saint Thomas Becket .
