Beyond the Ruwenzori (Original title: The Sins of Rachel Cade ) is an American melodrama from 1961 by director Gordon Douglas , the leading roles played Angie Dickinson , Roger Moore and Peter Finch . The plot is loosely based on the 1956 novel Rachel Cade by Charles Mercer.

action

During the Second World War, a Protestant nurse cared for those wounded in the Belgian Congo . Here their Christian worldview comes into conflict with that of the natives. The colonel of the nearby garrison , Colonel Henry Derode, falls in love with her and asks her to be his wife. But Rachel refuses. One day a plane crashes near them, but its pilot, Paul Wilton, can be rescued. Paul and Rachel fall in love. Rachel decides to continue her missionary work and provide for the natives until Paul's recall. She becomes pregnant, but soon after Paul is called back into the army.

Torn and remorseful about what he did to her, Rachel becomes ill. But eventually she manages to bring the child into the world. Paul returns to America, where he is promoted to colonel. When Rachel and Paul have reunited, she refrains from continuing her missionary work.

background

  • Roger Moore and Peter Finch don't share a scene; Photos of both were taken together only for advertising purposes. According to Roger Moore, Peter Finch suggested adding a box or two of Dom Pérignon to cheer the work up, which is why they'd been quite drunk during the shoot.
  • For the film, which was shot entirely in the studio, some unused landscape shots from the film The Story of a Nun (1959) with Audrey Hepburn were used. If you take a closer look you can see the breaks.

criticism

“The melodramatic story is based on the novel Sins of Rachel Cade , is played well and strives for a balanced representation of the theme of the missionary work of the leading actress - both from a missionary and from the perspective of the native Africans. Nevertheless, with a length of two hours, the film turned out to be a bit lengthy. "
