Juano Hernández (born July 19, 1896 in San Juan as Huano G. Hernandez ; † July 17, 1970 , ibid) was a Puerto Rican actor .

life and career

Juano Hernández was born to a Puerto Rican sailor and a Brazilian woman. Due to the lack of school attendance, he had to acquire an autodidactic education while he sang in the streets of Brazilian cities to earn money for meals. In adulthood, Hernández began a career as a professional artist. Hernandez made his film debut in 1914 with a small role in the silent film The Life of General Villa , in which the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa played himself in the lead role.

Hernández then worked in vaudeville shows, in the circus , on the radio and as a boxer . From the 1920s he gained some reputation as a stage actor and he appeared in many Broadway productions. He also appeared several times in African American independent films directed by the black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux . He took his first role in a Hollywood film in 1949 in Grip in the Dust , the film adaptation of William Faulkner's novel, directed by Clarence Brown . His performance as a venerable African-American landowner falsely accused of murder earned Hernández good reviews and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Young Actor . In the 1950s and 1960s, the actor played many supporting roles in film and television and was one of the best-known black actors of his time.

As one of the first black actors, Hernández consistently ensured that his roles were free from stereotypical clichés. He was never seen in films as a dancer or singer (as is usual with African American actors), but instead played profound and serious roles, often dignified African American or tribal leaders. In 1955 he played a judge in the film The Conspiracy with Glenn Ford . His most important appearances include Rattennest (1955), The Black Sergeant (1960), The Pawnbroker (1964) and The Gauner (1969). Some film historians see him as a role model for later African-American actors because of his progressive choice of roles and his recognition by critics. The film historian Donald Bogle called him an important pioneer for Sidney Poitier . Hernandez played his last role in 1970 alongside Poitier in the crime film Ten Hours of Time for Virgil Tibbs . Hernández died of a brain hemorrhage two days before his 74th birthday in his hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico .
